Faith Tested, Hope Unyielding: The Global Church Endures Persecution

Friends, as a Christian and an IT professional, I believe in looking at the data, but more importantly, looking at it through the lens of faith. The latest World Watch List (WWL) from Open Doors International for 2026 has been released, and it brings with it some truly sobering, yet spiritually significant, insights into the global Church. The findings are disturbing, revealing a stark reality for millions of our brothers and sisters worldwide.

This report isn’t just numbers; it’s about real people, real families, and real suffering for the cause of Christ. It’s a call to prayer and action for all who bear His name.

  • Who: Over 388 million Christians globally – a record number, representing one in seven believers worldwide – are currently facing high to extreme levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith. On average, 13 Christians are killed every single day for their commitment to Jesus.
  • Where: The most severe persecution is concentrated in nations like North Korea (ranking #1 for the 24th time), Nigeria, Syria, and across sub-Saharan Africa, where state-sponsored oppression, extremist militant violence, and societal pressure are rampant. Churches in countries like China and Algeria are increasingly forced underground by surveillance and crippling regulations.
  • What happened: Believers are subjected to killings, imprisonment, torture, forced displacement from their homes, church closures, and severe restrictions on worship and access to God’s Word. Nigeria alone accounts for 72% of all Christians killed worldwide for their faith in the reporting period, while Syria has seen a massive surge in violence following recent political instability, including a deadly suicide attack on a Damascus church.

As followers of Christ, we are called to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). Our brothers and sisters in these nations are enduring unimaginable suffering simply for their unwavering commitment to Jesus. Their steadfast faith in the face of such adversity is a powerful witness to the world, reminding us of the true cost of discipleship. We must not remain silent but actively stand with them through fervent prayer, tangible support, and compassionate advocacy, recognizing that when one part of the Body suffers, we all suffer (1 Corinthians 12:26). Their plight is our shared burden, and their resilience, a testament to God’s grace and the power of His Spirit at work within them.

Prayer Point: Please specifically pray for our brothers and sisters in Nigeria and Syria, particularly those who have lost family members or been displaced by violence. Pray for their divine protection, for courage to stand firm in their faith, and for God’s comforting presence to sustain them amidst their profound trials and the ongoing spiritual battle they face.
