Unbowed Faith: Latino Christian Communities Face Persecution and Show Resilience

Recent reports highlight a troubling trend of persecution faced by our Christian brothers and sisters within the United States. While many discussions about "persecution" can be abstract, the experiences of our Latino Christian communities present a stark and immediate call to conscience for all believers.

  • Who: Primarily Latino Christian pastors and congregants.
  • Where: Across various U.S. states, including incidents in Broadview, Illinois; Easton, Maryland; Brooklyn, New York; Portland, Oregon; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Yakima, Washington; New Jersey; and California.
  • What happened: Believers have been subjected to harsh treatment by government agents, including being pepper sprayed, shot (with non-lethal rubber bullets), detained, and some have tragically died in custody. Church services have been disrupted, and pastors have been directly targeted and detained, leading to fear that impacts congregational attendance and the ability of churches to minister effectively.

As followers of Christ, we are called to bear one another’s burdens and to love our neighbors as ourselves. The Holy Scripture teaches us to welcome the stranger and to treat them as native-born (Leviticus 19:34, Matthew 25:35). Our spiritual bonds in Christ transcend earthly borders and cultural differences, reminding us that "there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28). When our fellow believers—pastors and congregants—are unjustly targeted, harmed, and prevented from worshiping or living safely, it is an affront to the body of Christ. We must stand in solidarity, pray for them, and advocate for justice and compassion, recognizing their suffering as our own.

Prayer Point:
Please pray for divine courage and unwavering faith for Pastor Victor Martinez (Minneapolis) and all Christian leaders facing intimidation, that they may continue to shepherd their flocks without fear and that their churches remain sanctuaries of hope and safety for their communities.
