Priced Out of Hope: South Australia’s Housing Crisis is a Moral Failure We Cannot Ignore

This housing crisis isn’t just about numbers on a spreadsheet; it’s about real people, our neighbors, struggling to keep a roof over their heads. It’s a stark reminder that something is deeply broken when basic shelter becomes a luxury.

  • In just five years, the median home price in Adelaide has nearly doubled to $929,000, with average rents now around $630 a week – far outpacing what most working families can afford.
  • There’s an estimated shortfall of 36,000 affordable homes in South Australia, leaving at least 7,000 of our neighbors without a stable place to call home right now.
  • While wages have nominally risen by about 14% since March 2022, median home prices have skyrocketed by 42% in the same period, showing a widening gap that makes homeownership or even stable renting an impossible dream for many.

This isn’t some distant problem; this is happening right here, in our own backyards. Thousands of our fellow South Australians are being pushed to the brink – struggling to keep a roof over their heads or, tragically, finding themselves on the streets. As a community, and as people called to care for the "least of these," we simply cannot turn a blind eye to this suffering. It’s a fundamental test of our values and our humanity, and it demands our urgent attention and a real, compassionate solution, not just more political promises that seem to help the powerful instead of the vulnerable. We have a moral obligation to ensure everyone in our community has a safe, dignified place to live.
