National Database of Credibly-Accused Clergy Unveiled as Chicago Archdiocese Abuse Payouts Exceed $400M

The Archdiocese of Chicago has reached a new settlement with Jeff Anderson and Associates, bringing the total amount paid to abuse survivors to over $400 million. This settlement, finalized in the weeks leading up to a September 10 announcement, involves nine cases and amounts to $5.475 million. The Archdiocese of Chicago noted that these incidents are alleged to have occurred between 30 to 50 years ago, aligning with the majority of claims being reported today.

In a statement, the Archdiocese emphasized its ongoing commitment to supporting survivors, inviting them to come forward with the assurance of dignity and compassion. This commitment was first publicly acknowledged by Chicago Cardinal Blase J. Cupich in June, when the $400 million figure was disclosed on the archdiocese’s website.

During a news conference, attorneys from Jeff Anderson and Associates and Pearlman and Anderson highlighted nearly 300 settlements in their history with the Chicago Archdiocese. Marc Pearlman, representing sexual abuse survivors, underscored the significance of these settlements as validation of the survivors’ experiences. Mike Shereck, a survivor and client of Jeff Anderson and Associates, shared that his journey through the legal and emotional process brought him a profound sense of peace, surpassing any financial compensation.

In an effort to aid survivors nationwide, Jeff Anderson and Associates launched a national database of priests and clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse. Ian McIntyre, the firm’s senior communications coordinator, explained that this resource aims to assist survivors who may have incomplete memories of their experiences, providing a platform to verify details about their abusers.
