The Conroe City Council has recently approved new programs aimed at providing shelter dogs with opportunities to experience life outside their kennels. During a July 23 meeting, the council unanimously approved the Texas Dog Days Out and Texas Paws Away Weekend programs, as well as a longer-term foster program for the Conroe Animal Shelter.
The Texas Dog Days Out program allows participants to pick up an eligible dog between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., spend the day at pet-friendly locations, and return the dog by 4 p.m. The Texas Paws Away Weekend program extends this opportunity over a weekend, with dogs being picked up by 4 p.m. on Friday and returned by 4 p.m. on Sunday. These initiatives are designed for residents who may not be able to own a pet but still wish to spend time with one.
Animal Shelter Manager Lesa West emphasized that these programs are beneficial for dogs, particularly those that have been in the shelter for extended periods. By getting these dogs out of the shelter, the programs aim to reduce stress, increase their exposure to potential adopters, and provide insights into their behavior in different environments.
Participants in these programs must be at least 18 years old, present a government-issued photo ID, and adhere to specific shelter rules. Dogs must remain leashed, are not allowed to visit dog parks or interact with other animals, and must not be left unattended in vehicles.
Additionally, the council approved a formal foster program, which is intended to create a more stable environment for shelter dogs. These initiatives reflect a community effort to improve the well-being of shelter animals and provide them with opportunities for socialization and potential adoption.
