The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem announced on March 30 that an agreement has been reached with Israeli authorities to permit Holy Week and Easter celebrations at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. This resolution follows an initial prohibition that prevented Catholic leaders from celebrating Palm Sunday. The patriarchate stated that access for representatives of the churches has been secured to conduct liturgies and preserve ancient Easter traditions at the site.

The agreement was finalized one day after Israeli police barred Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and Father Francesco Ielpo, the custos of the Holy Land, from entering the church on March 29. This action drew global condemnation from religious and political leaders. The Latin Patriarchate described the barring of Catholic leaders as setting “a grave precedent” that disregarded the sensibilities of billions of people who look to Jerusalem during Holy Week.

In response to the incident, Israeli President Isaac Herzog stated he called Cardinal Pizzaballa to express his sorrow over the event in the Old City of Jerusalem. Herzog explained that the incident stemmed from security concerns due to the continuous threat of missile attacks from the Iranian terror regime against the civilian population in Israel. He noted that Iranian missiles had fallen in the area of the Old City of Jerusalem in recent days.

Herzog reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to freedom of religion for all faiths and to upholding the status quo at the holy sites of Jerusalem. The Latin Patriarchate expressed gratitude to Herzog for his prompt attention and valued intervention. The statement also extended appreciation to heads of state and officials who acted swiftly to convey their firm positions and personally reached out to express closeness and support.

Due to the current state of war, existing restrictions on public gatherings remain in force. Consequently, the churches will ensure that the liturgies and prayers are broadcast live to the faithful in the Holy Land and throughout the world. The X account of Palestine’s mission to the United Nations stated that the Israeli authorities’ actions against religious leaders were not without precedent, noting that Israel has for decades denied Palestinian Christians access to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

The rapid spread of news regarding the barred entrance on March 29 prompted swift denunciations from worldwide leaders. The situation highlights the tension between security measures and religious freedom in a conflict zone. As Micah 6:8 calls for justice and humility, the events underscore the need for accountability and the protection of sacred spaces amidst geopolitical tensions. The resolution allows for the continuation of ancient traditions while acknowledging the ongoing security challenges in the region.
