Christians from around the world are gathering in Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles, a significant event for many faith communities. The International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (ICEJ) is hosting its annual event from September 25 to 30, expecting approximately 3,000 participants from over 70 nations. Despite the challenges facing Israel’s tourism industry, Christian organizations and tour operators report continued interest in bringing visitors to the region.

David Parsons, senior vice president and spokesman for ICEJ, noted that the organization anticipates between 2,000 and 2,500 participants this year, slightly higher than last year’s attendance. He acknowledged the high cost of flights to Israel as a factor affecting participation but emphasized the strong local reception. “We’ve been well received in Israel,” Parsons said. “We sense a bigger embrace and a lot more encouragement from the local Israelis here this year and that’s exciting.”

The Feast of Tabernacles features a variety of activities, including worship services, seminars, the Roll Call of the Nations, and the annual Jerusalem March. ICEJ is also organizing tours to Judea and Samaria, where participants will meet local residents and visit businesses and tourist sites. These tours aim to deepen the connection between international visitors and the local community.

The event is also extending Christian tourism beyond the six-day Feast. ICEJ is offering an optional Galilee tour from October 1 to 4, taking participants to sites such as Magdala, the Mount of Beatitudes, Cana, Capernaum, Megiddo, and Akko. These visits provide opportunities for spiritual reflection and historical exploration.

Christians For Israel – Germany (CFI Germany) is also seeing increased interest among younger travelers. Dina Ehrhardt, head of CFI’s Young Generation department, led a group of 49 young adults from Germany in August as part of a program for Christians aged 18 to 25. The program was inspired by the need for a Christian equivalent to Taglit-Birthright Israel. CFI subsidized the trip through generous donations, with each participant paying about 1,000 Euros.

Ehrhardt emphasized the importance of personal encounters with Israelis, including Holocaust survivors and members of CFI’s network. Since October 7, 2023, the itinerary has also included sites connected to the war. “The stories of the people in Israel are what connects the younger generation’s hearts to Israel,” Ehrhardt said.

One participant expressed gratitude for the experience, writing in a feedback form, “I can’t understand how I was able to see and experience all these things for only 1,000 Euros.” Such testimonials highlight the growing interest in Christian tourism and the desire to engage with the region’s history and people.
