Archimandrite Ioustinos Mamalos Dies After Prolonged Illness, Leaves Spiritual Legacy in Holy Land
Archimandrite Ioustinos Mamalos, a devoted member of the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of spiritual and ecclesiastical service in the Holy Land. The Patriarchate of Jerusalem announced his death with deep sorrow, noting that he fell asleep in the Lord on Thursday, October 1, 2026, following a prolonged illness. His life was marked by a steadfast commitment to the restoration and preservation of sacred sites in the region.
Archimandrite Ioustinos dedicated many years to the extensive restoration, maintenance, and preservation of the Monastery of Jacob’s Well, a significant pilgrimage site in the Holy Land. His work was guided by a profound faith and love for the sacred shrines of the Holy Land, contributing to the spiritual and physical renewal of these important locations.
His service extended to the construction of the Church of Saint Photini the Samaritan Woman in Nablus, Samaria. This project, along with the restoration of Jacob’s Well, reflects his dedication to the development and preservation of Orthodox pilgrimage destinations. Through his efforts, Archimandrite Ioustinos made a lasting contribution to the spiritual life of the Holy Land.
The Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre expressed profound sorrow at his passing and offered prayers for the repose of his soul. They prayed that the Lord would grant him rest “in the land of the living, in the dwellings of the righteous,” where “there is neither pain, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.” This reflection aligns with the biblical hope for eternal peace and rest, as seen in Psalm 122:6, which speaks of the peace of the Lord dwelling in the city of God.
Arrangements are being considered for the transfer of Archimandrite Ioustinos’s body to the Holy Land, where his funeral service and burial are expected to take place. The exact date and location of the funeral service will be announced in a subsequent statement by the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. His passing is a reminder of the enduring spiritual legacy of those who serve the Lord in the Holy Land.
