A Crisis at Our Doorsteps: Our Neighbors Are Freezing While We Wait

When I read stories like this, my heart aches. We’re talking about real people, our neighbors, fellow children of God, right here in our own communities, fighting just to survive the harsh Canadian winter. Losing fingers to frostbite, or worse, freezing to death – these aren’t just headlines from a faraway land; this is happening in our own backyards, in Thunder Bay. As Christians, we’re called to care for "the least of these," and frankly, as human beings, we simply cannot stand by while our fellow citizens endure such suffering. This isn’t just a policy problem; it’s a moral crisis that demands our immediate, compassionate, and practical attention. We have to do better.

  • Life-Threatening Conditions: With wind chills dropping to -47 C, individuals like Nicole Chantal Pauluzzo have nearly lost fingers to frostbite, and tragically, a 35-year-old friend of Jason Strom froze to death this winter.
  • Staggering Numbers: Thunder Bay’s official count identified 652 people experiencing homelessness, though advocates believe the true number could be double that. Across northern Ontario, homelessness has surged by over 37% in a single year.
  • Systemic Gaps: Despite efforts, city officials and advocates agree there aren’t enough resources, including transitional housing and tailored support for issues like addiction, leaving emergency shelters overflowing and people waiting years for a safe place to call home.
