Hamas Leader Mourns Deaths of Palestinian Christian Women in Gaza Attack
Hamas political bureau chief Khalil al-Hayya has extended condolences to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem in Gaza following the deaths of two Palestinian Christian women, Maysaa Khedr Ibrahim Abu Daoud, known as Umm Michel, and her daughter, Mary Hafez Michel al-Najjar, known as Umm Fouad. The women were killed in an Israeli attack that struck their home in Gaza City early on Saturday.
In a message to Bishop Alexios, received by Quds Press on Sunday, al-Hayya expressed solidarity with the families of the two women and with Christians in Gaza and Palestine. He stated that the loss affected all Palestinians, emphasizing that “your grief is our grief, and your pain is our pain. All Palestinians are family and partners in the land, homeland and destiny.”
Al-Hayya highlighted that Palestinian suffering in Gaza today does not distinguish between Muslims and Christians, just as Israeli attacks do not differentiate between a mosque and a church. He affirmed the commitment of the Palestinian people, in all their diversity, to their land, rights, and aspirations for freedom and dignity.
He noted that Umm Michel and Umm Fouad had lived through Gaza’s hardships alongside their fellow Palestinians, sharing their hunger and suffering and serving their community. Their deaths have caused deep sorrow, and al-Hayya prayed that their families would be granted patience and peace.
He also called for the people of Gaza and Palestine to be protected, their suffering brought to an end, and for Palestinians to be granted security, freedom, and peace. The incident underscores the shared grief and resilience of the Palestinian people amid ongoing conflict.
The tragedy serves as a reminder of the human cost of violence and the need for compassion and justice. As the Bible reminds us, “If it is possible, whenever you have the opportunity, live in peace with all.” (Romans 12:18) In the face of suffering, the call to seek peace and care for one another remains as vital as ever.
