Two Suspects Arrested for Defrauding Job Seekers of Over US$40,000 in Zimbabwe

Two suspects, Patricia Muyambo Magazini and Mandras Muyambiwa, have been arrested in Chipinge for defrauding job seekers of over US$40,000 since 2024. Their deceitful tactics targeted individuals seeking employment in various regions, exploiting their desperation with false promises of lucrative positions.

The pair operated under the guise of recruitment agents for Mashoko Mission Hospital in Bikita, deceiving numerous job seekers before their scheme was uncovered. Inspector Anos Chindanya noted that the increase in fraud cases led to a focused investigation into the identities of those posing as legitimate job facilitators.

Through collaboration with a local service provider, investigators obtained critical details about the suspects’ communications and locations. The use of triangulation methods allowed police to track the suspects to Masvingo Province, where initial resistance from the suspect’s husband complicated the arrest process.

Following further coordination with the service provider, the police successfully apprehended Patricia Muyambo Magazini in Nyika’s Duma location. Her co-accused, Mandras Muyambiwa, was arrested in Zaka. Over 50 victims identified the suspects, who admitted to using fabricated connections to secure employment for financial gain.

Magazini confessed to being unemployed and working with Muyambiwa to commit fraud to fund a transportation services start-up. The examination of their belongings revealed the SIM cards that had been used to contact the victims, confirming their involvement in the scheme.

Superintendent Godfrey Likalawe highlighted a case where a complainant, lacking qualifications, convinced church members to send money with promises of recognition in a newspaper. The failure of these promises led to the reporting of the fraud, resulting in the recovery of US$40,247 and the clearance of 100 cases. (Proverbs 31:8-9)
