On July 14, 1771, the Franciscan friar JunΓpero Serra founded Mission San Antonio de Padua in what is now California. This mission was the third of 21 California missions and played a big role in spreading Christianity among the Native Americans in the area.
Mission San Antonio de Padua was part of Spain’s effort to colonize and evangelize California. JunΓpero Serra, who is now recognized as a saint, was a key figure in this mission system. His work laid the foundation for a deep Catholic presence in the region. The mission’s work reflects the call in Matthew 28:19-20 to make disciples of all nations and echoes Proverbs 16:9, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
Today, Mission San Antonio de Padua stands as a beautiful reminder of this historical and spiritual journey. Itβs a place where history and faith meet, showing the dedication and impact of early missionaries.
