A 47-Year-Old Church Minister Arrested for Allegedly Performing Caesarean Sections Without Medical Qualifications

The Anambra State Government has taken action against a 47-year-old woman, Mrs. Onyinyechi Esther Charles, for allegedly performing caesarean sections and other surgical procedures without the necessary medical qualifications, raising concerns about the safety of maternal healthcare in the region.

According to the Anambra State Ministry of Health, the suspect operated a traditional birth attendant (TBA) facility in Umueri, where she allegedly conducted caesarean sections, normal deliveries, and other procedures without proper training or authorization, putting lives at risk (Proverbs 31:8-9).

The ministry linked the facility to several medical complications and reported deaths, prompting an investigation by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, as part of the state’s effort to combat unqualified medical practitioners.

Officials stated that the suspect admitted during interrogation to performing caesarean sections and other procedures without approval, and she was also alleged to have previously been known as Eze Nwanyi before becoming a church minister and presenting herself as a surgeon.

During an inspection on July 12, health officials, along with the Mayor of Anambra East Local Government Area and security personnel, recovered surgical instruments and other equipment used in the alleged illegal operations, including what appeared to be a shrine and an altar within the premises.

The state government has sealed the facility pending legal proceedings, while the suspect is expected to be arraigned in court, highlighting the importance of accountability and the protection of vulnerable individuals (Ephesians 5:11).
