Madison’s New Men’s Shelter Needs Funding for 24/7 Operations

Madison’s Dane County is set to open a new men’s homeless shelter on Bartillon Drive in just one month. This initiative aims to provide safe haven for those struggling with homelessness, emphasizing the community’s commitment to neighbor care during challenging times.
The shelter will initially operate as an overnight facility, funded to run continuously for the first year. This temporary setup allows the operator, Porchlight, to recruit essential staff and prepare for full operations. The non-profit “Shelter Friends of Dane County” is spearheading fundraising efforts to sustain this vital service.
Once fully staffed, the shelter will transition to 24/7 operations, offering consistent support. This means guests will have access to case management services day and night, helping them address immediate needs and plan for long-term stability. While initial funding covers a year of these services, the organization is striving for a $20 million endowment to ensure ongoing 24/7 care without relying on annual fundraising campaigns.
Shelter Friends of Dane County CEO Kristin Rucinski highlights the importance of this continuous operation. She notes that overnight shelters, which must close each morning, force people into survival mode, hindering progress toward solutions. By providing 24/7 support, the shelter can better assist individuals in moving forward with their lives.
Rucinski acknowledges the county and city for their collaborative funding but stresses the need for community-wide investment. “It’s not just like funding a building; it’s funding and investing in those outcomes,” she explained, underscoring the shelter’s role in fostering tangible change for vulnerable neighbors.
