Central New York SNAP Benefits Delayed, County Provides Food Pantry List

Hundreds of residents gathered Wednesday at St. Lucy’s Church, lining up both inside and outside the auditorium to prepare for a potential pause in SNAP benefits. While some sat at tables for lunch, others waited with carts, attentively noting the numbers being called. They were stockpiling food in anticipation of a bleak period ahead due to the federal government shutdown.
Ashawnti Harris, 36, stood near the tables, watching her three-year-old daughter search through Halloween candy. On Monday, Harris received a text from the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance stating that “November SNAP Benefits may be delayed” because of the ongoing federal shutdown. For Harris, who is between jobs and relies on the $470 monthly assistance for her and her daughter, this news meant relying on limited funds.
The current government shutdown, now in its first month, is expected to delay SNAP benefits, a lifeline for many families in need of groceries. Harris acknowledged the limited cash cushion, estimating she only had about $86 left. She expressed hope that the food pantries would provide necessary staples like meat and toilet paper, adding, “We just gonna try these pantries and then see how long it takes for them to update the system.”
This shutdown, caused by disagreements between Democrats and Republicans over healthcare subsidies, marks the second-longest in history, following the 2018-2019 shutdown that lasted 35 days. States like New York are facing the challenge of covering the gap left by federal funds. Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon noted that 56,000 county residents depend on SNAP benefits, which are now in jeopardy.
McMahon emphasized that the federal shortfall is substantial, exceeding $23 million monthly, and far beyond the county’s capacity to address. “This is a federal problem,” he stated during a press conference on October 23. In response, the county announced plans to expand assistance through partnerships with PEACE, Inc. and the Department of Adult and Long-term Care, aiming to bolster existing programs like the 28 senior dining sites that offer free lunch to those over 60.
The county will also work closely with local food banks to help residents cope during the delay. As the federal impasse continues, community organizations are stepping up to provide crucial support, embodying the call to care for the hungry and needy, as highlighted in scripture.
