Charity Commission for Northern Ireland Investigating MFM Belfast’s Alleged Witchcraft Content

The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland is currently assessing allegations concerning Mountain Of Fire And Miracles Ministries (MFM) Belfast, a religious charity registered just last month. These allegations center around content shared on the organization’s Facebook page, specifically a post from April referencing “five kinds of witches or familiar spirits” from a sermon by Daniel Olukoya, a former leader of MFM International.
External critics have pointed to this sharing of the post as well as other statements made on the charity’s account. The National Secular Society highlighted concerns that promoting witchcraft beliefs could contribute to the “spiritual abuse” of vulnerable individuals, citing Micah 6:8, which calls for acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God. Furthermore, a November 2023 Facebook post by pastor Raphael Olushola Peters, referencing Olukoya’s comments, included condemnations of “homosexual relations,” “sinful abortion,” and “transgenderism.”
The Charity Commission confirmed awareness of the media attention and stated it is investigating the raised allegations regarding MFM Belfast. When Civil Society approached the charity for comment, no response was received. However, the regulator’s involvement extends back further, recalling a 2018 statutory inquiry into MFM International itself. That inquiry was prompted by repeated failures to submit timely financial information, leading to questions about the adequacy of the trustees’ oversight.
Additionally, the year prior to the international inquiry, an undercover investigation by the Liverpool Echo alleged that one of MFM’s branches was recommending treatments for a perceived “cure” of homosexuality. This history raises questions about the broader governance and practices associated with the Mountain Of Fire And Miracles Ministries network, particularly concerning its branches in Northern Ireland.
