New Men’s Shelter to Open in Madison on September 1, Funding Still Needed for 24/7 Operation

A new men’s shelter is set to open in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 1, marking a significant advancement in addressing homelessness within the community. This initiative results from a six-year partnership between Dane County, the City of Madison, and Porchlight, driven by the need to replace church-based shelters that closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The facility, located on Bartillon Drive, represents a purpose-built solution designed to provide stable housing for unhoused men in Dane County. Unlike previous shelters that operated in converted spaces, this new center is specifically constructed to meet the demand with improved access to services and a more supportive environment.
Officials highlight the shelter’s trauma-informed design, which prioritizes safety, privacy, and efficient care to better serve vulnerable individuals. As stated by Dane County Executive Melissa Agard, the opening reflects a community-wide commitment to responding with compassion and advancing the well-being of its neighbors in need.
Jim O’Keefe, Director of Community Development for the City of Madison, emphasized the need for the operator, Porchlight, to adjust to the new building and procedures. He also noted the financial challenge, explaining that while the city and county have already invested in operating the shelter overnight, funding for full 24/7 operation requires an additional $1 million annually.
The nonprofit organization Shelter Friends of Dane County is spearheading the fundraising effort to bridge this gap. Executive Director Kristin Rucinski confirmed that they have raised some initial funds but still face the substantial need to secure $1 million per year for continuous operation.
