Haverford College settles antisemitism suit, agrees to new campus policies

Haverford College in Philadelphia has reached a settlement with a Jewish advocacy group over allegations of antisemitic discrimination, marking a significant development in the ongoing discourse surrounding campus policies and the treatment of Jewish students. The legal action, initiated by Jewish members of the College community on May 13, 2024, claimed that the institution had violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and breached contractual obligations following the October 7, 2023, events. The 129-page lawsuit detailed multiple instances of anti-Jewish and anti-Zionist discrimination, including the pressure on a plaintiff to remove a pre-approved Antisemitism Awareness component from a women’s basketball game.
One of the lead plaintiffs, Ally Landau, recounted being urged by senior administrators, including Dean John McKnight, to cancel the event. Another plaintiff, HJSB, described being forced to alter her routine to avoid encountering blood libels directed at the Jewish people. HJSE, another plaintiff, was informed by President Wendy Raymond that an event organized by anti-Israel students, which claimed Israel was “weaponizing” COVID against Palestinians, was not antisemitic. These claims underscore the complex tensions surrounding the expression of political views on campus and the potential for such expressions to be misinterpreted or weaponized.
The plaintiffs were represented by The Deborah Project, a law firm dedicated to defending the civil rights of Jews in education. In a statement, Raymond affirmed that the college had reached an agreement with the firm, reaffirming its commitment to Jewish, Israeli, and Zionist students. She emphasized that harassment, exclusion, or silencing Jewish community members based on their beliefs or identity is incompatible with the College’s core principles. This stance aligns with the broader mission of Haverford to uphold justice and equality for all members of its community.
Raymond further stated that acts of discrimination, harassment, and bias against Jewish students, Israelis, and those who support Zionism are violations of College policy and antithetical to its values. She warned that anyone found engaging in such behavior would face disciplinary action. The statement reflects a growing awareness of the need to balance free speech with the protection of vulnerable communities, a theme echoed in biblical teachings that call for justice and mercy, as seen in Micah 6:8, which emphasizes doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God.
