Superior Church Offers Free Christmas Meals to Community
Zion Lutheran Church in Superior is set to serve 200 free Christmas meals on December 25, offering a warm gathering for those in need. The event, organized by church food shelf manager Vicky Holm, aims to provide a festive meal and fellowship for individuals who may not have family to celebrate with or the means to prepare a holiday meal. The meal includes a ham dinner with all the trimmings and a bag of holiday treats.
Last year, the church served over 80 people during a similar event, highlighting the growing need for such community support. Pastor Sarah Gunderson emphasized the importance of the meal as a way to share the joy of Christmas with others, making it accessible for all. “A free meal makes it accessible for all and is a way for us to share the Christmas joy with others,” she said.
Holm, who conceived the idea, noted that while many organizations offer free Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas meals are less common. “I don’t want anybody to think it’s Christmas and there’s no place to go,” she said. The event provides a space for people to connect, enjoy a hot meal, and experience the spirit of the season.
The meal will be served from 1-3 p.m. on December 25 at Zion Lutheran Church, 2022 E. Second St. It is free, but donations are welcome. Meal delivery is available if requested by December 23. For more information, contact 715-398-3663.
Volunteers, including Holm’s family, played a key role in the event. Her mother greeted guests at the door, while her grandchildren served snacks and drinks. Church office manager Paul Robinson described the event as a “sweet, wonderful” opportunity to provide food and nourishment to the community. Visitors enjoyed the fellowship and the goody bags, with many simply sitting and talking.
