Harare Man Accused of Fraud by Impersonating Pastor to Steal US$500 from Girlfriend

John Mushayavudzi, 32, appeared in court in Harare, facing fraud charges after allegedly deceiving his girlfriend, Enteetes Ashley Musamirapamwe, into giving him US$500 by impersonating a pastor. The incident began when Mushayavudzi asked Musamirapamwe for a US$200 loan, claiming he needed the money to retrieve his car from the border. She complied, but when she sought repayment a week later, he avoided her. Subsequently, he allegedly used a different phone number to impersonate a pastor from their church, sending messages that advised her not to demand the money back and claimed it was “seed money” that would multiply through faith.
The messages escalated in September 2025, instructing both Musamirapamwe and Mushayavudzi to contribute US$100 each per month, with promises of blessings and financial growth through prayer. Believing the spiritual pretense, Musamirapamwe continued making payments, unaware that the supposed pastor was actually Mushayavudzi. By November 2025, she had given a total of US$500.
Suspicions arose when she noticed inconsistencies in the messages and later discovered the truth. The matter was reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Glen View, leading to Mushayavudzi’s arrest. The total value of the alleged fraud is stated as US$500, though no funds have been recovered. The case underscores the need for accountability and transparency in spiritual leadership, as well as the importance of protecting victims from exploitation.
