Local Church and Community Leaders Mourn Passing of Helen Lorraine Heckman, Dedicated Nurse and Community Advocate

Helen Lorraine (Flowers) Heckman, a dedicated nurse and community servant, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2023, at Golden Orchards in Fennville, Michigan. Born on December 10, 1930, in Philadelphia, PA, Helen pursued a career in nursing, graduating from the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. Her professional journey took her across several states, including Illinois, West Virginia, and Michigan, where she served as a registered nurse.
In 1954, Helen met and married William “Bill” Riley at the Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago, IL. The couple moved to Michigan in 1955, where they established New Life Farms. Following Bill’s passing in 1968, Helen continued her nursing career, becoming the Director of Nursing at Allegan Hospital from 1970 to 1975. Her commitment to public health led her to the Allegan County Health Department, where she worked as a public health nurse until her retirement in 1995.
Helen’s community involvement was extensive. She was a charter member of the Allegan Co. Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Council (Safe Harbor) and an active member of the First Baptist Church of Allegan since the 1960s. In 1996, she served as the Director and Coordinator of the Partnership of Pine Trails Elementary School and Kids Hope, USA mentoring program. Her life exemplified the biblical principle of loving one’s neighbor, as seen in Matthew 25:35, through her tireless service and dedication to her community.
Helen remarried twice after the death of her first husband. She married Dean Brindley in 1972 and, after his passing in 2004, married Ken Heckman in 2007. Ken passed away in 2012. Helen is survived by her stepchildren, step-grandchildren, and numerous extended family members. Her legacy is remembered by those whose lives she touched through her professional and volunteer work.
Friends and family are invited to gather at the First Baptist Church of Allegan on Thursday, October 19, 2023, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, for a funeral service led by Pastor Nathan Smith. Helen’s life of service and love reflects the biblical call to care for others, as highlighted in Galatians 6:10, leaving a lasting impact on her community.
