Men experiencing homelessness in Madison will soon have a secure place to stay as the city’s first-ever, purpose-built emergency shelter opens its doors on September 1. Located at 1904 Bartillon Drive on Madison’s northeast side, this new facility will provide temporary housing for up to 250 men, offering not just a bed but also a locker for personal belongings, case management, and meals, all managed by Porchlight Inc.

The shelter, which is part of a broader community response to housing insecurity, is a significant step forward in addressing the needs of those who find themselves without a home for the first time or for extended periods. Recent data indicates that 30% of single households in Dane County experiencing homelessness are doing so for the first time and for longer durations, highlighting the urgency of such initiatives.

Designed with care and community input, the shelter was developed through a trauma-informed approach. The city’s Community Development Division, led by Jim O’Keefe, emphasized that the facility was built with its guests’ needs in mind. A 2022 study by Shopworks Architecture gathered insights from nearly 200 community members to ensure the shelter met their needs effectively.

The Bartillon shelter is not only a refuge but also an environmentally conscious building, having achieved a Gold rating in the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) system. It boasts significant savings in energy and water usage, using 29% renewable energy and saving 53% of its water, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.

In addition to providing a safe place to sleep, the shelter includes a medical isolation area equipped for health-related services such as foot and wound care, frostbite treatment, and blood pressure monitoring. This comprehensive approach ensures that guests receive the care they need while they work towards securing permanent housing.

Strategically located near the state Division of Motor Vehicles office and accessible via Metro Route L, the shelter is poised to serve as a critical resource for men in need. As the community and city officials continue to support and expand such initiatives, they embody the biblical call to care for the least of these, as highlighted in Matthew 25:35, by providing shelter, dignity, and hope to their neighbors.
