“Rise in Religious Harassment: Jewish Extremists Target Nuns in Jerusalem’s Old City”

In Jerusalem’s Old City, a place revered for its sacred sites shared by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, tensions have escalated, casting a shadow over the historical harmony among these faiths. The delicate balance that once existed is now threatened by increasing expressions of hostility, particularly from Jewish extremist groups. Critics argue that this rise in tension is partly due to the tacit acceptance and, some claim, encouragement from the Israeli government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which includes far-right parties.

The Christian Quarter has become a focal point for these interreligious tensions. The Religious Freedom Data Center (RFDC), an Israeli civic group, reported 83 cases of harassment targeting Christians from April to June of this year. The most common form of harassment was spitting, with 47 reported incidents, followed by eight cases of verbal abuse. These acts of aggression are seen as overt expressions of hostility toward Christianity, often perpetrated by Jewish extremists and teenagers who emulate them.

In response to these threats, the RFDC initiated a volunteer escort program to protect clergy from harassment. This initiative gained traction after a French nun was assaulted in April, heightening anxiety among the Christian community. An African nun expressed hope for improvement, noting the necessity of the escorts for their safety. The harassment is not limited to isolated incidents; for example, on August 4, a Jewish teenager spat at nuns as they were escorted through the Old City.

The situation has prompted churches to take measures to minimize their visibility, such as reducing the prominence of crosses, in an effort to avoid becoming targets. This cautious approach underscores the growing concern over extremist actions. In a related development, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-right politician, made an unannounced visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem, further intensifying the already tense atmosphere.

These events highlight the urgent need for dialogue and understanding among the communities. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” In this spirit, fostering peace and neighbor-love becomes imperative to address the underlying issues fueling these tensions.
