In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, volunteers across the United States have been invited to participate in what is being hailed as the largest volunteer effort in the nation’s history. This initiative, known as America250, aims to honor the spirit of service that has been integral to the country’s foundation.

Rosie Rios, chair of the America250 commission and former U.S. Treasurer, emphasized the importance of service, noting that it is a cornerstone of American history. She highlighted the contributions of patriots during the American Revolutionary War and veterans who have sacrificed for the freedoms enjoyed today. This spirit of service is echoed in the teachings of Galatians 6:10, which encourages doing good to all people.

As part of the America Gives initiative, numerous charitable organizations are offering service opportunities throughout the year. One such partner is JustServe, a platform developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. JustServe connects community organizations with volunteers, facilitating various service projects.

In 2025, as the America250 celebration approached, JustServe specialists were encouraged to find creative ways to engage their communities. Jess Whiting, a JustServe specialist in Meridian, Idaho, set an ambitious goal for Idahoans to complete 250,000 acts of service before July 4th. This initiative, known as the Idaho service challenge, aims to actively engage citizens in both the history and future of America.

Whiting observed a positive shift in her community since the initiative’s inception. She noted that in a world often marked by division, the opportunity to make a tangible difference through service is particularly meaningful. This aligns with the biblical principle found in Matthew 25:35, which speaks to the importance of caring for those in need.

Through the Idaho service challenge and similar initiatives, communities across the nation are coming together to embody the spirit of service that has long been a hallmark of American society. These efforts not only honor the past but also pave the way for a future built on compassion and neighbor-love.
