Pro-Israel Group Reports Escalated Vandalism at Norway Democracy Festival Amidst Genocide Accusations Against Israel

In recent years, the term “genocide” has been increasingly used in controversial contexts, notably against Med Israel for fred (MIFF), Europe’s largest non-religious pro-Israel membership organization. This term has been employed to portray MIFF as a target during Norway’s largest democracy festival, Arendalsuka. Last year, Line Khateeb, then-leader of the Palestine Committee of Norway, defaced MIFF’s tent with the word “genocide.” She was fined by the police and compensated MIFF for the damage.

This year, the situation escalated as MIFF’s tent was vandalized more severely. The tent was cut open, with “genocide” written repeatedly, the Star of David in their logo was slashed, and the word “peace” was removed. Subsequently, materials concerning sexual crimes allegedly committed by Hamas on October 7 were thrown outside the tent. These acts of vandalism occurred despite MIFF’s commitment to promoting evidence-based information about Israel, the Jewish people, and the Middle East, aiming to foster understanding through open dialogue and debate.

MIFF’s approach to disagreement is one of conversation, contrasting sharply with those who resort to vandalism. This is not an isolated incident; since October 7, 2023, MIFF has documented repeated harassment at pro-Israel events, including physical altercations and graffiti with violent messages. Such incidents highlight the dangerous consequences of rhetoric that blurs the line between political criticism and collective guilt, potentially inciting violence against Zionists, Jews, and their supporters.

In response to this troubling trend, MIFF joined the educational initiative “Gaza GenoLIE,” a campaign uniting over 70 organizations from 15 countries. This initiative aims to educate the public on how the genocide narrative was allegedly created, amplified, and weaponized by Hamas and its supporters. The campaign seeks to clarify the eight components of what they term the “GenoLIE,” emphasizing the need for truth and understanding in public discourse.

As we reflect on these events, we are reminded of the biblical call to “let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream” (Amos 5:24). In a world where words can fuel division, it is crucial to seek truth and promote peace, embodying the spirit of Micah 6:8, which calls for justice, mercy, and humility.
