Former Preacher Charged with Embezzling Nearly $58K from Columbus County Church

In Columbus County, a former Baptist preacher, Devin Cyrus Carroll, has been charged with 16 counts of embezzlement following allegations that he misappropriated nearly $58,000 from Happy Home Baptist Church. The charges, stemming from events in February 2024, assert that Carroll redirected $42,925 of church funds to cover personal loan payments to Advance America.

Further allegations suggest that Carroll embezzled an additional $14,685.98 for various personal expenses, including dining, retail shopping across three states, horseback riding, and a personal cellphone bill. The warrants also indicate that $323.15 was misappropriated for retail purchases, and $323.15 was used for a veterinary visit for a dog owned by the church.

During his initial court appearance, Carroll was appointed a public defender and ordered to post a $75,000 bond. It is noted that at the time of his arrest, Carroll was already out on pretrial release for charges pending in South Carolina.
