Warming Centers Open in Lowcountry to Aid Homeless and Community in Cold Weather

As temperatures drop in the Lowcountry, community leaders and organizations have stepped up to provide essential services to those in need. This weekend, several warming centers will open their doors to offer respite from the cold, particularly for individuals experiencing homelessness or lacking adequate heating at home.

The Seacoast Church in Summerville will open its warming center at 301 E 5th St. on Friday and throughout the weekend. The center will provide a warm dinner, a hot shower, bedding, and a takeaway breakfast. In the spirit of Matthew 25:35, which calls for caring for “the least of these,” the center is welcoming not only people but also their pets, ensuring no one is left behind.

To facilitate access, CARTA will provide transportation to the warming center. For those needing additional assistance, community members can text TRANSPORT to 320320 for help.

In North Charleston, Seacoast Church will also be open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Saturday at 5505 N Rhett Avenue, offering a safe and warm place for those in need. Similarly, Holy City Missions at Aldersgate United Methodist Church will accept guests on a first-come, first-served basis from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, February 6, and continuing through Sunday, February 8. Transportation is available via CARTA Route 13.

Guests at Holy City Missions will receive a hot dinner, breakfast, a grab-and-go lunch bag, a hot shower, warm clothes, and toiletries. This initiative reflects the community’s commitment to caring for its most vulnerable members, echoing the call in Isaiah 58:7 to “seek justice, correct oppression, bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.”

These efforts demonstrate a compassionate response to the needs of the community, providing not just physical warmth but also a sense of belonging and care, in line with the biblical principle of loving one’s neighbor as oneself.
