In recent developments, the Trump administration’s campaign against antisemitism on university campuses has come under scrutiny. The administration’s Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, operating under the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services, has been accused of inflating claims of antisemitism related to pro-Palestine protests at universities. This initiative, while ostensibly aimed at protecting Jewish students, has been criticized for exaggerating the prevalence of antisemitism, thereby overshadowing genuine incidents.

In early 2025, the task force initiated investigations into 60 colleges and universities under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, alleging widespread antisemitic discrimination and harassment. Prominent institutions such as Harvard, Columbia, and Brown were among those targeted. However, these allegations were later deemed to be significantly overstated, failing to meet the criteria set by Title VI.

A whistleblower disclosure from a former Justice Department attorney has shed light on the investigation’s purported ulterior motives. The disclosure claims that the investigations were marked by procedural irregularities and lacked factual or legal support, suggesting they were part of a politically motivated effort to extract funds from universities.

Despite the absence of substantial evidence for pervasive antisemitism, the Trump administration froze federal grants for several universities. Columbia and Brown agreed to pay $270 million to settle the administration’s claims, while Northwestern paid $75 million under similar terms. Harvard, however, resisted these pressures.
