Silicon Valley Pastor Facing Child Sex Abuse Charges Granted Reduced Bail by Judge

In a recent development, a former Silicon Valley pastor, Brett Bymaster, has been granted the opportunity to post bail after being charged with multiple felony counts of child sex abuse. The charges allege lewd acts with a child as young as eight during his tenure at The River Church. Initially set at $400,000, Bymaster’s bail was reduced to $50,000 by Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Hector Ramon, who determined that Bymaster did not pose a flight risk or threat to public safety. The decision came after his defense attorneys, Renee Hessling and Dana Fite, highlighted his history of community service.

Bymaster, who led the youth ministry at The River Church, was arrested and booked at the Elmwood Correctional Facility. His defense maintains his innocence, with attorney Dana Fite asserting that he does not pose a safety risk. As part of the conditions for his release, Bymaster is prohibited from contacting anyone under the age of 18, except for his own child, and is also barred from contacting the victim named in the charges.

The River Church’s Interim Board Chair, Cameron Ashizawa, expressed the church’s sorrow over the allegations, affirming their support for the victims and the broader church community. This case follows a series of investigations into Bymaster’s conduct, including a third-party investigation initiated by sexual abuse investigator Amy Stier in January 2024.

Bymaster’s arrest marks the second investigation into his actions within three years, following a 2021 probe that reportedly failed to uncover the full extent of the alleged abuse.
