Elmer Perez, a 49-year-old pastor of the Iglesia De Jesucristo Church in New Bedford, was apprehended by Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston on August 15 in North Dartmouth. Perez, who is unlawfully present in the United States, allegedly committed these offenses against a female parishioner in Massachusetts. The charges underscore the gravity of the accusations and the community’s need for justice.
According to ERO Boston, Perez entered the United States without inspection, admission, or parole by U.S. immigration officials, and he has been living in Massachusetts since then. The agency has emphasized its commitment to public safety by apprehending and removing noncitizen offenders from New England neighborhoods, as stated by ERO Boston’s acting Field Office Director, Patricia H. Hyde.
The Bristol County Superior Court initially arraigned Perez on February 21, 2020, on the aforementioned charges. An immigration detainer was lodged against him on December 20, 2019. Despite the serious nature of the charges, Perez was released from custody on August 15, at which point ERO Boston took him into custody under the terms of the immigration detainer.
