“Pastor Charged with Sexual Abuse: Survivors Speak Out After Decades of Silence”

In a recent development involving a former Chicago pastor, two survivors of childhood sexual abuse have come forward, sharing their experiences and the challenges they faced in seeking justice. Pastor John Kim, who served as a youth pastor at the Salvation Army Mayfair Community Church, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery. However, he will not be required to register as a sex offender, a decision that has left the victims feeling frustrated and unheard.

Catherine Park, one of the survivors, recounted the distressing experiences she endured. She described how Pastor Kim would offer rides, during which she felt an impending sense of discomfort, knowing what was to come. Despite her discomfort, she found herself physically moving closer to him, as the abuse began with seemingly innocent gestures like prolonged hugs and inappropriate touching. Park emphasized that the environment at the church, where Kim’s family played significant roles, left her with no outlet to express her concerns.

For years, Park remained silent about the abuse, only coming forward when a personal situation involving her brother’s wedding prompted her to speak out. She described the abuse as non-consensual and intentional, emphasizing the need for accountability.

Ellen Kim, another survivor, shared a similar story. Meeting Pastor Kim at the age of seven, she described how the abuse became routine before she even understood what was happening. The validation of their shared experiences empowered both Park and Ellen Kim to file charges together in January 2023. Pastor Kim faced charges of criminal sexual abuse of a minor, to which he pleaded guilty to reduced charges of aggravated battery.

During their victim impact statements, both survivors detailed the alleged grooming and non-consensual touching they endured, as well as the long-lasting effects of the abuse. Park reflected on how the abuse led her to question her worth and lovability, a burden she believes was unjustly placed upon her.

In a statement, Pastor Kim acknowledged his past actions and expressed remorse, indicating a need to apologize to another victim. This case highlights the importance of accountability and justice, aligning with the biblical call to “act justly and to love mercy” (Micah 6:8). It underscores the need for communities to provide safe spaces for victims to come forward and seek healing, ensuring that justice is served and the dignity of all individuals is upheld.
