Federal authorities have charged Apollo Carreon Quiboloy, the leader of the Philippines-based Kingdom of Jesus Christ Church, with trafficking girls and young women for sex and orchestrating a scheme that involved his followers soliciting donations in the United States under duress. The indictment, unsealed by a Los Angeles grand jury, expands upon an initial case from 2020 that accused church officials of coercing parishioners into fundraising on U.S. streets and committing immigration fraud to keep them in the country.
The expanded indictment directly accuses Quiboloy of recruiting girls and young women, referred to as “pastorals,” to serve as his personal assistants. These individuals, some as young as 12, were tasked with cooking, cleaning, and traveling with Quiboloy, often under the guise of fulfilling “God’s will.” Prosecutors allege that these pastorals were also required to perform “night duty,” which involved having sex with Quiboloy, whom his followers revere as “The Appointed Son of God.”
The indictment identifies several underage victims, including girls aged 14, 15, and 17, who were allegedly directed by church officials to engage in sexual activities with Quiboloy. The pastorals were reportedly coerced into writing “commitment letters” that pledged their lives and bodies to him. During a raid on the church’s compound in Van Nuys, FBI agents discovered 80 passports, seven wedding rings, and a folder labeled “Traitor,” which prosecutors describe as evidence of a decade-long human trafficking conspiracy.
