Chaldean Patriarchate Disavows “Babylon Brigades” Link, Clarifies No Armed Militia Affiliation
The Chaldean Church has officially distanced itself from the so-called “Babylon Brigades,” clarifying that no armed militia is linked to the Church. This statement was issued by Chaldean Patriarch Louis Raphael I, who emphasized that the Church has no direct or indirect connection with any armed groups that claim to represent the local Christian community. The declaration was made in an official statement released by the Chaldean Patriarchate to reaffirm the Church’s stance against any association with militant organizations.
Patriarch Louis Raphael I also addressed the issue of Chaldean notables who have allegedly obtained letters granting them political authority. The patriarchal statement noted that some elderly notables, taking advantage of the Patriarch’s health condition, have acquired such permissions. However, since Patriarch Louis Raphael I assumed his role, letters have been sent to civil authorities to clarify that no notable politically represents the Chaldean Church. The only official political representatives of the Chaldean community are those legitimately elected in Parliament.
The “Babylon Brigades” claim to be “Christian citizens trained to defend the Christian cities of Mesopotamia” against jihadist forces. However, the Patriarch has repeatedly condemned such groups, stating they are composed of foreign criminal terrorists from countries including Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Tunisia, Turkey, Kuwait, Libya, and Morocco. The Patriarch has consistently advocated for the protection of communal rights through peaceful means and the eventual service in national armed forces.
In recent years, the Chaldean Church has faced significant challenges, including the dwindling number of Christian families in Mosul and the ongoing struggles of communities displaced from the Nineveh Plain. Patriarch Sako, who previously led the Church, emphasized the fidelity of the Christian community in the face of tribulations. His calls for unity among the “heirs” of the Church of the East have underscored the importance of solidarity in addressing current challenges.
The Chaldean Patriarchate has also expressed concerns about the impact of regime change strategies, warning that such approaches can exacerbate the situation for local communities. These statements reflect the Church’s broader commitment to peace and stability, aligning with the biblical call to seek justice, mercy, and humble service. Micah 6:8 reminds us that these values are central to the Christian life.
