Madison, Wis. — After years of planning and construction, Madison’s new purpose-built men’s homeless shelter is set to open its doors on September 1. Located at 1904 Bartillon Drive, the facility offers a modern approach to homelessness, with sleeping areas, private spaces, and a kitchen designed to meet the needs of shelter guests.
Despite the $27 million investment in the new facility, it will have significantly fewer beds than the current shelter on Zeier Road. The current facility has been serving an average of about 325 people per night this summer. Porchlight Executive Director Karla Thennes acknowledged that not all individuals currently using the shelter will have a spot at the new location, highlighting a pressing concern about capacity.
The new shelter emphasizes dignity and service, featuring smaller sleeping areas with lockers and electrical outlets for guests, addressing their needs for safety, privacy, and security of belongings. This design shift aims to foster a more personalized approach to service delivery.
A key focus of the new shelter is to connect individuals with permanent housing solutions. Unlike traditional drop-in shelters, guests will be assigned beds and work with case managers to secure housing. This approach reflects a commitment to moving beyond temporary shelter solutions, aligning with the biblical call to care for the least among us (Matthew 25:35).
Madison Community Development Director Jim O’Keefe noted that the decision for a smaller capacity was intentional, based on consultations with operators of shelters nationwide. The goal is to enhance safety and service quality, transitioning focus from merely providing shelter to facilitating exits from homelessness.
As the shelter opens as an overnight facility, city officials and Porchlight continue to work with current guests, helping those not selected at the new site find alternative accommodations, including permanent housing or transportation to other locations. This effort underscores a community-wide commitment to addressing homelessness with compassion and practical support, reflecting the call to act justly and love mercy (Isaiah 58:7).
