“Over 50 Jewish Organizations Declare Zionism as Integral to Jewish Identity in Jerusalem Declaration”

Over 50 Jewish organizations have declared that Zionism is an integral part of Jewish identity. This declaration was made at a gathering in Jerusalem, where presidents, CEOs, chief rabbis, and other senior leaders from Diaspora communities reaffirmed their commitment to Jewish self-determination.

The J50 Declaration on Zionism and Antisemitism, signed by 59 organizations, unequivocally states that Zionism is part of Jewish identity. William Daroff, CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, chaired the J50 Forum gathering. He emphasized that the declaration affirms Zionism as the national movement of the Jewish people and their right to self-determination in their ancient homeland, Israel.

The document calls for the recognition and confrontation of anti-Zionism when it is used to marginalize, exclude, or discriminate against Jews. It asserts that anti-Zionism, particularly when it involves denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination or demanding that Jews renounce Zionism for acceptance in various spheres of life, is antisemitic.

The declaration highlights that the right of the Jewish people to self-determination is increasingly challenged and denied. It notes that governments, international institutions, municipalities, political parties, media, cultural institutions, universities, educational institutions, professional associations, and civil society are becoming arenas for the delegitimization and distortion of Zionism, which serves to marginalize and exclude Jews.

The gathering, hosted by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on September 1, brought together major Jewish organizations and leaders from Jewish communities across the Diaspora to sign the declaration. The statement concludes by asserting that Zionism is part of Jewish identity and that others should not define it for them. This declaration stands as a testament to the ongoing commitment to Jewish identity and self-determination, reflecting a call for justice and accountability in the face of discrimination.
