Leading Zionist figures in the UK, including Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis, have actively sought to prevent the Church of England from discussing a report by Palestinian Christian groups on alleged genocide in Gaza. The report, titled “A Moment of Truth: Faith in a Time of Genocide,” was published by Kairos Palestine on November 14, 2025. The Church of England’s General Synod is set to consider a motion at its annual gathering in York. This motion does not require the Church to endorse the document but encourages engagement with it to better understand the Palestinian Christian experience amid the conflict in Gaza. Chief Rabbi Mirvis, whose son serves in the Israeli army, has expressed concern over the motion, suggesting it could harm Christian-Jewish relations. He described the Kairos II document as “deeply concerning,” arguing that it presents a one-sided account that downplays Jewish historical experiences and frames political activism as theology.
Kairos II characterizes Israel as a “colonial, settler, and exclusionary entity” and asserts that Palestinians are the indigenous people of the region. It calls for churches to engage in dialogue with Jews but to distinguish this from dialogue with Zionism. The document also addresses the October 7, 2023, attacks, stating that while the context does not justify civilian casualties or violations of international law, it is important to consider the broader historical and political context.
This situation highlights the complex interplay of politics, religion, and historical narratives, echoing the biblical call for justice and peace.
