The Therapeutic Benefits of Confession

I didn’t grow up in a church that talked about confession. In the Protestant world, especially here in the South, we skip over those parts of the Bible. There’s no mechanism for confessing. But after years of carrying around anger and “garbage” in my soul, I realized something: Secrets are poison.

I found true healing not through therapy or pills, but through the biblical mandate of confessing our sins to one another (James 5:16). I spent years accumulating trash in my spirit, and the only way to become “lighter” was to start throwing it out (Psalm 32:3-5).

The modern world wants to diagnose you with a disorder every time you have a human emotion. They want to medicate you for being sad or angry. But maybe what you really need is to empty the trash can (1 John 1:9). Maybe you need prayer, scripture, and the freedom that comes from having zero secrets.
I’d rather be poor and honest than rich with a soul full of lies (Proverbs 28:6).

Don’t hide your sin (Proverbs 28:13). If your church doesn’t have a place for confession, make one for yourself.
