Light Work
We all have a job to do. I do IT work to pay the bills, but that’s just what I do to survive. My real employment is for Jesus Christ. The problem is, most of the modern church treats the faith like a hobby where we only do the easy stuff—the “light work.”
We love to focus on the low-friction tasks like gathering together or making a joyful noise because they are safe. It’s “Dollar Tree Christianity”—cheap, easy, and it doesn’t require any courage. But when you look at the actual job description in Isaiah 1, God doesn’t ask for comfortable worship. He commands us to seek justice and correct oppression.
Correcting oppression isn’t passive; it requires confronting the oppressor. It requires “heavy lifting” that might cost you your reputation or your comfort. Jesus made it clear in Matthew 25 that He separates the sheep from the goats based on this work—feeding the hungry and visiting the prisoner—not on how loud we sang in the choir. It’s time to stop hiding behind the easy list and get to work on the weightier matters of the law.
