Residents of Boulder Hill, Illinois, have expressed concerns about the establishment of an overnight emergency shelter for the unhoused in their community. The shelter, proposed by Oswegoland Community House and to be hosted by the Neighborhood Church of the Brethren, aims to provide a warm place for individuals during nights when temperatures drop to 32°F or colder. This initiative is set to begin in November.

The shelter’s location, adjacent to Boulder Hill Elementary School, has raised security concerns among neighbors. Residents like Darlene Miller have voiced their opposition, citing proximity to schools and community areas as primary issues. Signs opposing the shelter have appeared on lawns throughout the neighborhood.

Lisa Cook, a local resident, highlighted worries about the safety of nearby parks and other areas frequented by children. The school was informed about the shelter proposal approximately a month ago, with assurances that operations would commence after school and after-school programs had ended, ensuring students were not present during shelter activities.

Niya Kelly from the Chicago Coalition to End Homelessness emphasized the importance of considering community members who might need support during difficult times. She encouraged neighbors to reflect on the potential need for such services among their own families or acquaintances.

As the community meeting continues, residents plan to express their concerns, seeking to influence the decision-making process regarding the shelter. Oswegoland Community House and the Neighborhood Church of the Brethren have not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
