The City of Greensboro is preparing to launch a new emergency homeless shelter and create job pathways for some of its most vulnerable residents. During a recent cold snap in January, the shelters served between 180 and 190 individuals on some nights.

This initiative is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to adapt its services to the evolving needs of its population.
In addition to addressing immediate housing needs, the city plans to implement a day labor program designed to connect those experiencing unstable housing with low-barrier employment opportunities. This program will cater to unhoused individuals, including those with criminal backgrounds or those engaged in substance abuse, by offering positions in community-based work such as litter collection. City officials emphasize that these opportunities will provide a pathway for individuals to reenter the workforce and contribute to various industries.
