Detroit Church and Top Ladies of Distinction Honor Lupus Warrior During Awareness Month

In observance of Lupus Awareness Month, a Detroit church and the Top Ladies of Distinction community organization honored Trudi N. Smith, a Detroit resident living with lupus. The special Sunday program at Pleasant Grove Church celebrated Trudi’s resilience and aimed to raise awareness about the disease.

Trudi first experienced lupus symptoms during her college years in 2004. Her mother, Yolanda E. Smith, who also has lupus, noted that Trudi’s symptoms were far more severe than her own. Over the years, Trudi faced significant health challenges, including a severe case of shingles that left her unable to walk and a COVID-19 infection that required ventilator support. As a result, she has been unable to speak.

Despite these challenges, Yolanda visits Trudi daily, maintaining a strong connection with her daughter. She attributes their perseverance to faith and advocates for accountability from healthcare providers. “We’re praying, and I tell the doctors you do your part. I’m going to do mine and you just watch this miracle that’s going to happen for Trudi,” Yolanda expressed.

Pastor Dr. Louis Forsythe II highlighted Trudi’s story as an inspiration for the congregation. “Trudi is an example to all of us of how you navigate different health challenges. How do you maintain your faith, your dignity, and not let that define your situation?” he reflected. This story underscores the importance of community support and faith in facing life’s challenges, resonating with the biblical call to care for the vulnerable, as seen in Matthew 25:35.
