Victim Compassion Fund continues to support Grand Blanc church attack victims

One year after the deadly attack on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, the Victim Compassion Fund continues to support victims and their families in their recovery. Established in the aftermath of the September 28, 2025, incident, the fund was created by people in Mid-Michigan and across the country who sought ways to provide assistance.

Cheryl Slater of the ELGA Foundation for Impact noted that the response included an outpouring of support from individuals with no prior attachment to the local community, many of whom reached out after seeing the tragedy on national news. The fund has addressed a wide range of needs, including funeral expenses, travel costs for family members, and repairs to vehicles damaged by gunfire and smoke.

Assistance has also been provided to replace personal belongings that victims were forced to leave behind while escaping the burning church. These items include clothing, shoes, cell phones, and other possessions. Slater stated that the fund has issued over 100 grants totaling more than $100,000 in grant dollars.

The financial support has varied in scale, covering large expenses such as flying children in and covering funeral costs, as well as smaller necessities like children’s clothing and phones. Slater explained that these replacements were necessary to help make the victims whole again.

The Victim Compassion Fund is managed by the ELGA Foundation for Impact in partnership with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Grand Blanc Township police, and township officials. This collaborative effort reflects a practical response to the immediate and ongoing needs of those affected by the violence.

The sustained provision of material aid to those who have suffered loss aligns with the biblical principle of caring for the afflicted, as seen in Galatians 6:10, which encourages doing good to all people, especially those within the community of faith. The focus remains on tangible support for recovery and stability in the wake of the attack.
