LDS Church donates food and mosquito nets to 1,500 flood victims in Akwa Ibom

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated food items, mosquito nets, and other relief supplies to 1,500 flood victims in Akwa Ibom State. This distribution follows earlier contributions by the church, which provided 268 wheelchairs and 181 walking aids to individuals living with mobility challenges.

The humanitarian intervention was a response to flooding caused by torrential rainfall and storms. According to Senator Akon Eyakenyi, the Deputy Governor and SEMA Coordinator, the disaster affected more than 36,000 people across 8,169 households in 16 local government areas of the state.

Elder Christian Chibundu, a member of the African West Area Presidency of the church, addressed the ceremony by stating that the donation was prompted by information regarding the impact of the floods on vulnerable families. He emphasized that the recent flooding left many households without food, shelter, and other basic necessities, while noting that climate-related disasters continue to affect communities.

Chibundu described the intervention as a reflection of the church’s commitment to serving people in need, asserting that service to humanity is an expression of service to God. He stated that the church does not discriminate in its humanitarian interventions and provides assistance to people regardless of their religious affiliation, viewing all individuals as sons and daughters of their Heavenly Father.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs. Eno Akpan, thanked the church for its continued humanitarian support. She commended Governor Umo Eno for fostering an environment that allows government and development partners to collaborate in supporting vulnerable residents.

Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, received the items on behalf of the government and described the donation as an important addition to relief efforts. The state government has assured flood victims that the relief materials would be distributed fairly, openly, and exclusively to those genuinely affected by the recent floods.

A beneficiary, Mr. Idongesit Dan, expressed appreciation to both the church and the state government for their support. The state government indicated that its partnership with humanitarian organizations will continue as it works to provide support to residents affected by disasters across Akwa Ibom State. This practical care for neighbors in distress aligns with the biblical mandate to show mercy to those in need, as referenced in Hebrews 13:16.
