225 Years Ago, Cane Ridge Revival Birthed Restoration Movement
In 1801, a revival at Cane Ridge, Kentucky, marked a turning point in American religious history. Known as the Cane Ridge Revival, this event brought together thousands of believers from various denominations, including Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians. Barton W. Stone, a 28-year-old Presbyterian clergyman, led the gathering, which emphasized preaching Christ without the use of confessions or creeds. This revival is often referred to as “America’s Pentecost” by historian Paul Conkin.
The Cane Ridge Revival is considered a pivotal moment in the emergence of the Restoration Movement, also known as the Stone-Campbell Movement. This movement sought to return to the early Christian practices and beliefs, rejecting denominational divisions. To commemorate the 225th anniversary of the revival, a gathering of about 200 people filled the Cane Ridge Meeting House, now encased in the Stone Memorial Building. The event took place in the same location where the original one-room log church was built in 1791.
Attendees at the anniversary event included members of a cappella Churches of Christ, independent Christian Churches, and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). All three groups trace their modern-day roots to the Restoration Movement. Joel Brown, president of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society, highlighted the significance of the event, noting its impact on American religious life and its relevance to the faith communities present.
Jennie Shirey, a participant at the event, lifted her 4-year-old grandson, Emerson Marsala, to view a miniature replica of the Cane Ridge Meeting House in the Barton Warren Stone Museum. This museum serves as a testament to the historical significance of the revival and its lasting influence on the Restoration Movement.
The a cappella Churches of Christ and the independent Christian Churches each have approximately 1 million baptized members in the United States, according to national surveys. However, precise numbers are challenging to determine due to the autonomous nature of individual congregations. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination reports having 600,000 members in the U.S. and Canada.
The Restoration Movement, born from the Cane Ridge Revival, continues to influence the spiritual and communal practices of its adherents. The anniversary event served as a reminder of the movement’s origins and its enduring legacy in the broader Christian landscape.
