Rochester Salvation Army Launches “More than a Coat” Drive to Provide Free Winter Clothing
The Rochester Salvation Army launched its “More than a Coat” initiative on Tuesday, offering free winter outerwear to community members in need. The event, held at the Salvation Army’s location, targeted families with children on Tuesday and couples and single adults without children on Wednesday. The drive aims to provide essential winter clothing, including insulated gloves, winter boots, and snow pants, to those facing financial hardship.
Major Randy Hellstrom, representing the Salvation Army, emphasized the organization’s role in bridging the gap between generosity and need. “People have given us these coats and then we get to be in charge of giving those coats away,” he said. “We’re right at that point of impact and it’s a great place to be.” Hellstrom highlighted the importance of ensuring donated items are both functional and wearable, reflecting the Salvation Army’s commitment to practical aid.
The Salvation Army noted a current shortage of adult 3XL coats and kids 4T coats, underscoring the specific needs within the community. Donors are encouraged to bring items that are in good condition and suitable for winter wear. Hellstrom reiterated that the organization does not accept clothing that would not be wearable for the recipient. “If it’s not something that you would wear yourself, we ask, don’t bring it in here,” he said, emphasizing the importance of quality and usability in donations.
Community members interested in donating can contact the Rochester Salvation Army at 507-288-3663 for more information. The initiative aligns with the Salvation Army’s broader mission of providing practical assistance and support to those in need, reflecting a commitment to mercy and care for the vulnerable. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God, the Salvation Army continues to serve as a tangible expression of these values in the community.
