Kalamazoo County officials have reached out to local municipalities for assistance with funding emergency winter shelters for the homeless, emphasizing the need for a collaborative approach to this community-wide issue. The city of Kalamazoo has pledged up to $500,000 for the Winter Solutions Shelter Initiative, while the county government is contributing $250,000. The Continuum of Care, coordinating the effort, is adding up to $100,000 and staff time. Kalamazoo Township plans to consider the request during their budget discussions in November, while Oshtemo Township has yet to make a decision. The county has asked six local municipalities to consider contributions based on their population and budget size. Kalamazoo Township is being asked for up to $50,000, Parchment for up to $15,000, and Comstock, Texas, and Oshtemo Townships for up to $25,000 each. The city of Portage is being asked to contribute up to $100,000.
Kalamazoo, designated as a host community due to its concentration of shelters and hospitals, bears a significant portion of the responsibility. The other municipalities, referred to as donor communities, have been contributing by supporting the broader network of care.
