Assyrian Bishop Testifies At Senate Human Rights Caucus On Assyrian Persecution
Bishop Mar Paulus Benjamin of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East testified before the Senate Human Rights Caucus, highlighting the plight of Assyrians in Iraq. The event, launched by Senators Mark Kirk and Chris Coons, focused on the atrocities committed by the Islamic State (ISIS), including the persecution of Yazidis, Shiites, and the displacement of 200,000 Assyrians.
The Caucus brought together a range of experts and advocates, including Assistant Secretary of State Tom Malinowski, Dr. Katrina Lantos Swett from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, Pascale Warda from the Hammurabi Human Rights Organization, Manal Omar from the United States Institute of Peace, and Sarah Margon from Human Rights Watch. Bishop Benjamin joined them as a representative of the Assyrian community.
Senator Kirk emphasized the need to address the fear and abuse perpetuated by ISIS, stating that the Caucus would serve as a voice for the voiceless. He expressed gratitude to Malinowski and other panelists for their contributions to raising awareness about the ongoing suffering in the Middle East.
Senator Coons underscored the importance of American leadership in upholding human rights, noting that those suffering under oppression often remain unheard. He expressed pride in co-chairing the bipartisan caucus with Kirk and committed to ensuring policy responses reflect the nation’s highest values.
Bishop Benjamin spoke of the ancient heritage of Assyrians, who have endured centuries of suffering while maintaining their identity as Christians. He described the community’s resilience and the deep connection to their language and faith. He recounted the genocide of 100 years ago, which he said the world has largely forgotten, and urged against its repetition.
The bishop’s testimony served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by Assyrians, emphasizing the need for international attention and action to protect their rights and dignity. His words reflected the broader concerns of the Assyrian Church of the East and its leadership in advocating for their people.
