The Landing Place Family Shelter Set to Open in Kalamazoo County

The Landing Place, a much-needed transitional housing shelter for families experiencing homelessness, is preparing its official debut in Kalamazoo County. This initiative aims to offer stability to families who have previously resided in overcrowded spaces like spare rooms or vehicles, marking a significant step towards addressing housing insecurity locally. The facility, located at 1912 E. Kilgore Service Rd., represents a full transformation from its former life as a Country Inn & Suites building.
Developed over nearly two years, The Landing Place is the result of collaboration between Kalamazoo County Housing Resources Inc. and the community. County ownership and a substantial investment in renovation are foundational to its operation, providing 77 rooms specifically designed for family shelter. The goal is to assist families in navigating the complex path to permanent housing, moving beyond immediate crises.
Beyond the physical shelter, comprehensive wraparound support services are integral to its mission. These include job training, financial planning, and life skills development, alongside child care assistance and connections to other community resources. Agreements with local school districts ensure that children can maintain their education by accessing school transportation while staying at The Landing Place.
The impetus for this project aligns with concerning data: Kalamazoo County reported 1,700 K-12 students facing homelessness in 2024, a 30 percent jump from the previous year. This statistic underscores the urgency for solutions like The Landing Place, designed to help families overcome the barriers contributing to housing instability.
Family Promise Inc., a secular organization operating nearly 200 family shelters across the U.S., is set to manage The Landing Place on a day-to-day basis. Cheryl Schuch, the organization’s CEO, expressed the strong connection felt between their mission and Kalamazoo’s needs, highlighting the community’s understanding of the challenges faced by families in crisis.
