Chechester Area Council has approved a 1 million pound allocation for housing projects aimed at reducing homelessness, as part of a broader strategy to address the housing crisis between 2025 and 2030. The decision was made during a meeting on 22 September, with the funds already allocated to the strategy. A committee had previously recommended the use of these funds at an earlier meeting on 1 September, before the full Board gave its approval.

The approved projects include a 300,000 pound investment in the establishment of Pinewood House in Innsworth Clouses, designed to provide short-term housing for 51 homeless individuals. The Council also plans to allocate 100,000 pounds annually for the Homelessness Prevention Fund during the fiscal years 2026/2027 and 2027/2028. This fund will assist families at risk of losing their homes before reaching the emergency housing stage.

In addition to temporary housing, the program includes funding for initiatives that support residents of temporary housing and raise awareness about housing issues. Ona Hickson, the Executive Member responsible for housing, revenues, and subsidies, emphasized that the Council’s priority is helping people achieve safe and adequate housing. This includes providing financial advice and budgetary assistance to prepare beneficiaries for long-term stability.

The Council’s annual report from July revealed that 91 families were living in temporary housing at night, including dormitories and breakfast shelters, which are often the most expensive and least stable options for local authorities. The Board is working to control costs by directly managing part of the housing provision.

Separately, the Chechester Board has also agreed to pursue additional measures to address the growing need for temporary housing. These efforts reflect a broader trend among local councils in the United Kingdom, as they face mounting pressures to provide housing solutions for vulnerable populations. The Council’s actions align with the biblical call to care for the poor and the marginalized, as seen in Proverbs 31:8-9, which urges leaders to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
