Des Moines Nonprofit Closes on Conversion of Two Extended Stay Hotels into Supportive Housing
Greater Des Moines Supportive Housing (GDMSH) has finalized the purchase of two former extended stay hotels, located at 2701 Westown Parkway in Des Moines and 3940 114th Street in Urbandale. The nonprofit plans to transform these properties into permanent supportive housing, offering nearly 200 units for individuals experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. The initiative aims to provide stable living conditions with access to essential support services.
Emily Osweiler, CEO of GDMSH, emphasized the importance of offering secure housing and resources to those in need. “It means permanent housing. People will sign a lease; they’ll pay rent. They’ll have their own private studio apartment, but then on-site wraparound support services, so things like case management, and group and classes, and a food pantry,” she explained.
The new housing units will be fully furnished studio apartments with kitchenettes and bathrooms. Additional construction on each site will include community spaces, recreational areas, and on-site support services designed to meet the diverse needs of residents.
GDMSH anticipates beginning construction and renovation work this fall, with the goal of welcoming residents to the properties by the end of next year. Both the cities of Urbandale and West Des Moines provided unanimous approval for the project, reflecting community support for addressing housing insecurity.
The initiative aligns with the biblical call to care for the vulnerable, as seen in Proverbs 31:8-9, which urges advocating for the oppressed and ensuring justice for the poor. By providing stable housing and support, GDMSH seeks to embody the spirit of neighbor-love and mercy.
